And Then There Were Two (Potential Hospital Sites)

Two sites remain in the running for the location of the future Marquette General Hospital.

One of the sites is in the city of Marquette, the other is in Marquette Township.

The precise sites have not been officially identified. In fact, neither MGH nor Duke LifePoint Healthcare, which owns MGH, has officially announced that they're down to two choices.

Several weeks ago, the list of potential sites stood at 30 plus. It was to be narrowed to a dozen or so, then to maybe five. All of the sudden, it now stands at two.

A consulting firm out of Nashville is making the re-location analysis for Duke LifePoint and this week met with representatives of both Marquette and Marquette Township.

Still plenty of work to be done. Both sites reportedly have plenty to offer.

And it would be an understatement to say that both municipalities will also have plenty to offer the hospital. It may come down to money, tax breaks.

The city badly wants to keep the hospital, the township would love to steal it away.

It'll be a $290 million dollar investment by Duke LifePoint. The final decision on the site will likely come within two months.

  1. Golf Course was already announced and behind Target is the leading rumor. Space behind target will require the least amount of work to get ready and the golf course will probably want $3 million to pay off their debt so I would bet on the township.

  2. Yep, the township will use the tax money to finally have a police department and a full time fire department and buy some snowplows.

  3. The township is nothing without Mqt and does not gain by taking from it . If Mqt gets blighted it will have huge adverse consequences on all the sounding areas including Mqt township.

  4. City of Marquette could annex the property.

  5. Mi law makes annexation nearly impossible without mutual voting between municipalities.

  6. Hey, they could take the old hospital and turn it into a "Mall" where people from the township could come and sell their arts and kraps, er, I mean, crafts. Maybe some woefully underfunded "developer" could come in and and spend the next 10 years turning it into a regional arts and crafts and performing arts and dinner theater and then the last remaining tenants of the "Mall" on Washington St could move in.

And... then someone could bring some veggies and meat to put into the stone soup... Oh, yoopers, you so adorable.
