Cliffs Shake-up, Schneider Break-up, and a Surprising Website Breakdown
CLIFFS NATURAL RESOURCES is preparing for a potentially nasty and climactic shareholders meeting and vote on July 29th.
Casablanca Capital, the activist hedge fund which owns about 5% of Cliffs, is essentially attempting a coup of the company. It's putting up its own, hostile slate of candidates for the Cliffs board of directors.
If it wins the board vote, Casablanca would likely fire the CEO, radically change the company strategy and divest some of Cliffs international operations.
Cliffs, for its part, calls the Casablanca candidates inexperienced. It's attempted to appease Casablanca by offering the hedge fund a few slots on the board of directors, but Casablanca has rejected the compromise. It wants control of the company. It blames current Cliffs management for failed strategies, excessive salaries and plummeting stock prices.
How much of a plummet? How about a share price of $99.86 on July 22, 2011...and a share price of, oh, about $15 or so today. Quick math tells you that's an 85% slide in three years.
Worse news: there's nothing to indicate that iron ore prices worldwide are going up anytime soon. If anything, they may continue to decline.
Worse, worse news: a law firm has just filed a class action suit against Cliffs for allegedly misrepresenting itself to investors and misleading them about the company's financial condition.

IF JASON SCHNEIDER, the former City Commissioner and current County Commission candidate, had intended to botch his exit from his job at Accelerate UP and to sully his otherwise sterling reputation, he succeeded in admirable fashion.
For the last fifteen months, Schneider, with funding from the Lundin Foundation (yeah, the mining company), has been helping young businesses get on their feet with the aid of other established businesses in the community. By all accounts, he's done a wonderful job, and he, himself, has nothing but praise for Lundin and its role in supporting him.
Problem is, the Accelerate UP board of directors told him back in May it didn't like the idea of him running for county commission because it didn't like to mix politics with business. You can disagree with that logic--and many of us do--but the fact is, he was told back then that if and when he won the commission seat, he'd have to resign from Accelerate UP.
If he'd been so upset about the ultimatum, he should have resigned right then and there. That would have been the principled thing to do.
But Schneider chose not to resign then. Instead, he decided to wait for a couple of months before suddenly announcing his resignation last week. He informed his board of his decision by email...and then one hour later, notified the media. Soon thereafter, he then told all his friends on Facebook about his decision.
At worst, it sounds like a publicity stunt designed to gain sympathy and votes a few weeks before the election. At best, it was an unfortunate, ill-timed move by a novice politician.
Oh well. But what's more baffling is why he didn't continue working his job helping entrepreneurs until the election came around. If he were to lose the election (he's up against incumbent Bruce Heikkila), Lundin had told him he would keep the job and continue his good work.
You also have to ask yourself: Which is more valuable? A fulltime job helping struggling, young businesses? Or a parttime job as a county commissioner?
Yeah, we'll hear all about "principles" and the big, bad mining company and the backroom conspiracies, etc but the fact is, a good man doing a good job took a messy way out when he didn't have to. And Marquette County is the worse for it.

NUMBERS CAN LIE, and frequently do.
But here are some numbers that might force the local television industry to sit up and take notice:
TV6 in May reported 2.5 million page views on its website (impressive, a tenfold increase over just ten years ago).
But ABC 10 in June reported...(drum roll, please)...2.7 million page views.
What???
Okay, time for caveats. First, it is two different months but that shouldn't have made that much of a difference. And second, it's two different companies calculating the monthly analytics reports so maybe it's not quite apples to apples.
But still.
TV6 has long been the overwhelmingly dominant station here--its newscast numbers dwarf those of ABC 10 and TV 3 (the newcomer to the game). But online, ABC 10 apparently has been making huge strides. It does have a remarkably active social media presence.
It still seems hard to believe, because the TV6 website remains robust and ever-alert to breaking news and it's got many more reporter-contributors than ABC 10 does.
Let's see what shakes out in the months ahead. Maybe these latest numbers are just an anomaly. And yes, sometimes numbers do lie.

Come winter months the numbers will once again be far apart due to the weather team at TV6, and ABC 10's weather team being in the Lower Peninsula. It's till no surprise to see growth with a new, albeit busy, website. Especially when comparing to previous iterations of the ABC 10 website.
ReplyDeleteI think the circumstances surrounding Jason taking the job in the first place are unfortunate. While on the city commission he inaccurately accused Rio Tinto of being convicted of murder and warned the commission to not work with the company in any capacity. This was covered by local media. Yet, when Rio Tinto offered Jason a job, he took it, for a group that was started by, funded, and controlled by Rio Tinto, all while still being a city commissioner. I don't know why this is okay in Marquette, because similar behavior in Lansing or Washington would be seen as a bit shady and unprincipled.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that it took Lundin to insist that being an elected Marquette County politician and representing their corporate interests in Marquette County wouldn't look good.
I also think Acclerate UP's benefits are a bit overblown. I'm sure anything that well funded benefited the community to an extent, but Baraga County, which is in far worse shape economically than Marquette County, stopped working with the group. One would think if it was so beneficial they would have stuck with it.
Minor correction: ABC10's 2.7 million page views is a figure strictly from June 1 to June 30. The "3.5 million" (not mentioned in the article) is a 30-day average that spans over 2 different months - from May 22 to June 25. 2.7 million is only June as reported by 1and1.com... We hope/anticipate/are-grateful-for this trend to improve every month, and we'll definitely keep you posted... #wots :)
ReplyDeleteNow that WJMN is local I wonder how the views will trend? This market is too small for three stations.
DeleteIt is important to note that Accelerate the UP, while being funded by the owners of the Eagle Mine (first Rio Tinto, now Lundin), is a Nonprofit organization that is supposed to provide a service to the county. The Accelerate the UP Enterprise Facilitator (Jason Schneider) was not hired to represent or further the corporate interest. If there was any conflict of interest it would have existed within the board of directors of Accelerate the UP, and I applaud Jason's willingness to leave a good job on matters of principle.
ReplyDeleteThe Enterprise Facilitator contract says one cannot run for public office. He was on the job how long and waited to make this an issue? Political stunt, pure and simple.
DeletePlease check the contract wording closely. I do believe the wording states that he could not again run for his city commissioner seat.
DeleteI am curious what matters of principle Jason Schneider displayed in leaving a job that came with the stipulation that it was politics or the job. That the Accelerate The U.P. did not want the appearance of a political face seems more admirable than the candidates posturing.
ReplyDeleteNice....
Delete.great point.
I agree.
DeleteSchneider's turning his back on the people he was 'helping', and stabbing the back of the company that paid him well to do some good just goes to show he probably is going to do fine as a career politician.
ReplyDeleteHis motives are obviously self serving, not for the greater good. The Enterprise Facilitator position was probably more work than Jason liked to do. He'd rather sit on his soap box and act superior to everyone else. Go back to Cali.
DeleteI can only speak to those of us who live in Iron County. We get the TV signal from 10 but not from 6, so I am one who does not go to the tv6 website, ever. Thank you to 10 for the signal !! We are local, news starved!!
ReplyDeleteNaysayers who have the audacity to attack a candidate on his own personal Face Book could redeem themselves. Please do something constructive such as address the Graymont Proposal and develop a positive solution in dealing with these robber barons, which in my opinion, includes Sen. Tom Casperson.
ReplyDeleteSerious? Robber barons? Try posting to Facebook, driving your car, brushing your teeth or cooking without these companies operating. You may not like that argument, but it's a reality. Stop with the NIMBY mentality and try to think outside your limited scope of knowledge.
DeleteAudacity? I think it's pretty audacious to call a group started, funded, and staffed (the board) by one of the largest mining companies in the world "grassroots," as Jason did on Facebook Whether it's the Koch brothers or Jason Schneider, that is unacceptable, and mendacious, in fact. It's really a shame that no one is allowed to call Jason out for anything shady, or even disagree with him, without being called names. He's running for political office, not being nominated for a sainthood. And spin is spin, no matter who's doing it.
DeleteIt's not surprising that ABC 10 has bigger numbers. They broke the story of Bobby Glen Brown, have a much active social media identity. Months ago it was very little. Might be due to news directors changing roles. Where's ABC 10's old director? WJMN.....which has their Facebook page as WJMN...not Local 3 News. Which would make much better sense. Regardless, you have to go where the viewers are...where are they? Buried on their phones and social media. I know very few people anymore that even have TV. If anybody wants to stay relevant anymore, go where the people are, not necessarily change habits.
ReplyDeleteAlso I've noticed 10 will post things on Social Media before the actual newscasts, so they break a lot of stories first because of that. WJMN rarely does unless it's some sort of car accident or press release about some 'happy sappy' story. You can tell that TV6 is scared of the changing UP TV Market.
Speaking of social media, it's been a nice change seeing The North Wind keep up this summer instead of having 4 months dormant. They're putting more videos up on their youtube page as well. Good ones to mention. As a former Northern Student, it's a nice welcome.
TV6 isn't used to having competition from 2 other TV stations (Local 3 & ABC 10.. and even TV 19 WZMQ) it's never happened before. It will be very interesting to see the numbers in a couple of years, especially after ABC 10 gets their brand new news set, and upgrade their tower/power.
DeleteWill the signal from 10 make it into Marquette?
DeleteRight now all we get is Channel '3' and TV '6' analog signal on channel 7.
We used to get 19 but they moved their antenna

ReplyDeleteReally, Lorinser? This clumsy attempt is what passes for social marketing? Well, I guess it's good enough for yooper TV stations.
